do the best, visit naples

One of the most striking cities in Italy is Naples, a city blessed with natural wonders, from its volcanic backdrop to its rich blue sea. Naples boasts some of the world’s most important archaeological treasures; its historic center has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To truly appreciate these treasures, pay a visit to the National Archaeological Museum which presents one of the world’s most diverse collections of Graeco-Roman artefacts.

The monumental 18th century palace, the Palazzo Reale di Capodimonte, is home to one of the country’s richest art galleries, with its collection boasting everything from exquisite altarpieces to works by the great masters, Michelangelo, Raphael and Titian. Here, too, you will find Boticelli’s Madonna with Child and Angels and an incredible range of 18th century chinoiserie. Naples has always been a religious center, and its oldest catacombs, the Catacombe di San Gennaro, became a pilgrimage site in the 5th century. Deep in the heart of this complex, you can explore corridors of tombs, 5th century mosaics and even earlier frescoes. Construction first began on Naples’ Duomo cathedral in 1272, but over the centuries artists have added their personal touch. The 17th century Chapel of the Treasury and the late 19th century neo-Gothic façade, seem practically modern in comparison with fragments of 4th century mosaics that make up the Battistero di San Gionvanni in Fonte, or the partially uncovered Greek and Roman buildings under the Duomo. By far, however, Naples is known for its culinary treasures and serves some of Italy’s best pizzas, pasta and coffee. Its proximity to the sea ensures that seafood dishes are always delicious and fresh. Naples’ close proximity to the ruins of Pompeii, which was destroyed by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, makes this city a popular base for exploring the region
